South West Working Equitation Club has attracted 11 competitors for its first meeting at Port Fairy Showgrounds on Sunday.
Organiser Linda Carson said the club, which has operated for three years, was determined to grow.
She said the best way to attract new members and interest was to run a competition.
“It’s still small but some are coming from Northern Victoria to compete in it,” the Simpson-based Carson said.
Points accured from Sunday’s event will go towards riders’ tallies as they chase spots at the Victorian championships in April.
Carson said working equitation was a worldwide equestrian genre which usually consisted of four phases.
Dressage, style, speed and cattle.
“It trains all aspects of horse riding,” she said.
“There’s a bit of everything. It makes it interesting.”
Style focuses on obstacles such as opening a gate or going over a bridge.
The South West Working Equitation Club’s inaugural competition will consist the first three phases with cattle – a team’s event – missing due to a lack of facilities.
