Warrnambool police Senior Constable Ashlea Witham said a white VE Commodore station wagon was being driven south on Banyan Street by a couple when there was a verbal interaction with a teenage male pedestrian.
The teen then made contact with the vehicle, which performed a U-turn and a brawl developed involving about six people - adults and teenagers - near the intersection of Lava and Banyan streets.
"There was a brawl that spilled out onto the road. It was pretty full-on," Senior Constable Witham said.
"We have spoken to all those directly involved but would like independent witnesses to come forward with information. We currently have conflicting versions of events being provided."
Senior Constable Witham requested anyone with information contact her or Senior Constable Joe Fisher at the Warrnambool police station, or call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
