The young Waves lost round two of their premier league season, going down to Barwon by nine runs at Terang on Sunday.
Barwon batted first and made 205 from its 50 overs. Merrivale’s Flynn Wilkinson and Bodey Hosking from Mount Gambier were the most successful of the bowlers, taking two wickets each.
After a slow start at the batting crease, the Waves challenged in the middle overs, with a 69-run partnership between Merrivale’s Hugh Fleming (17) and Horsham’s Jett Hopper (71) raising hopes of an upset win.
The Waves fell just short of that but Templeton drew plenty of positives from the game.
“Barwon is a very good side,” Templeton said.
“We lost a couple of early wickets but it was great we were able to stay in the game and keep them under pressure.”
The Warrnambool and District Cricket Association (WDCA) under 14 and 16 representative teams were in action at Port Fairy on Sunday.
The WDCA teams played Mount Gambier in the Cross Border Challenge.
Mount Gambier won the under 14 game in a thriller. Mount Gambier batted first and made 119 from its 40 overs. In reply, WDCA made 9-118. Joe Douglas was the star for the WDCA team, taking two wickets and making 44.
Coach Jamie Fogarty said it was an entertaining encounter.
“Both teams played good cricket, the standard was exceptional,” Fogarty said.
In the under 16 game, a standout performance from Hawkesdale and Koroit player Fletcher Cozens led the WDCA team to a comfortable victory. Batting first, the WDCA team made 8-240 from 50 overs, with Cozens making 69. Mount Gambier was then bowled out for 117.
