The green SS Holden ute, which was stolen from a Warrnambool address, reached speeds of more than 150km/h before coming to an abrupt end in Camperdown about 1.30pm.
The stolen vehicle, with false number plates, was spotted by the Highway Patrol on Caramut Road speeding in the opposite direction.
Detective Senior Constable Richard Hughes, of the Warrnambool Criminal Investigation Unit, said the driver of the vehicle was able to evade police but was later spotted again and police began a pursuit.
He said during the 40-minute pursuit, the vehicle reached speeds of more than 150 km/h as it led police through Framlingham, The Sisters, Noorat and along the Princes Highway to Camperdown.
Detective Senior Constable Hughes said the pursuit came to an end near Scott Street when the front wheel of vehicle hit the gutter, forcing the car onto two wheels.
A male, 39, who was wanted by police, was arrested and was brought back to the Warrnambool police station to be questioned in relation to a number of crimes committed over the past month.
The car’s other occupant, a 30-year-old woman, was also assisting police with their enquiries.
