Returning to the CBL after a long absence, the Hurricanes have been competitive without saluting.
That was until Sunday at St Joseph’s Stadium when they defeated Warrnambool Seahawks 76-70.
There was plenty at stake with both teams going into the game without a win.
The Seahawks started strongly on their home court, leading 16-14 at the first break. The Hurricanes closed the margin to just one goal at half-time before the Seahawks slid out to a 57-54 advantage going into the last quarter. But it was the Hurricanes who finished strongest, storming home to record a memorable victory.
Captain Sam Brewer was a star for the Hurricanes, shooting 23 points.
Hurricanes coach Russell Sherren said he was thrilled for his team.
“It’s pleasing to get the monkey off the back and win one,” Sherren said.
“We were down a bit on numbers today so that made it even more impressive.
“We have had some really good patches through the season offensively but our defence has let us down.
“I thought today we defended well and also shot well which makes a difference.”
In other results over the weekend, the Portland Coasters defeated the Hurricanes 82-55 on Saturday while the Tearng Tornadoes lost 81-64 to Bellarine Storm on Sunday. In the CBL South West women’s competition, the Warrnambool Mermaids lost both its games over the weekend.
