He was eight when a training session at his home club Wesley-CBC unearthed the hidden talent.
Now 12, the cricket-mad King’s College student is determined to develop his craft.
“I was actually a medium pacer and I showed up to one of the trainings at Wesley and I was mucking around bowling an off-spin ball,” Greene said.
“The coach saw it and he goes to ‘Wormy (Matt Wormald) ‘teach him how to bowl leggies’ and I just started to bowl leg spin from there.
“I bat a little bit. I am not as good at batting. I prefer batting up the order but kids are better. I don’t hit it very hard – yet.”
Greene, who rates Australian duo David Warner and Shane Warne as his favourite players, is one of the youngest members of the Alastair Templeton-led under 14 Western Waves team.
He took 2-6 in the Waves’ opening Youth Premier League win against Mallee Murray Bulls in Horsham and is hoping to add to his tally against Barwon Rockets in Terang on Sunday.
Greene, who plays under 13s and under 15s at Warrnambool and District Cricket Association level, is making the most of his chance.
“I got selected for country week and was lucky enough to get a few wickets and get picked to go into the squad, which put me into a winter program which was quality coaching and improvement,” he said.
“They had trials and from the trials they picked 13 to play for the Waves. I was younger so I wasn’t expecting too much. I thought I’d have one more crack next year.”
