Her success is paving the way for other aspiring female cricketers from the Western District town.

Three Mortlake-based teenagers – Taylah Casson, Brodie Humphrey and Shae DeFrancesco – will represent Western Waves’ under 17 team in the Youth Premier League.

Casson and Humphrey will team up for the Waves’ opener against Mallee Murray Bulls in Horsham on Sunday, while DeFrancesco will return for the remaining games in January.

Western Waves coach Maddi Tobias said their selection highlighted the talent coming out of Mortlake.

"All three of them are strong powerhouses of the side and easy selections to make,” she said.

"Taylah is vice captain. Her knowledge of the game is unreal and she applies herself and comes back bigger and better every year.

"She's our quickest bowler and we expect her to take wickets.

"Brodie hits the ball further than anyone on the team and we're hoping she has some luck with the bat and posts some scores.

"We've decided to get her bowling some spin as well.

"Shae is a great all-rounder and applies herself well. In the field her intensity is good and she is a consistent pace bowler.”

Casson said Wareham’s success on the international stage at the ICC Women’s Twenty20 World Cup was inspirational.

“It is pretty cool to see someone I have watched play cricket for a while doing good things,” she said.

Humphrey and Casson, both 16, go to school together at Camperdown’s Mercy Regional College.

Humphrey plays for Woorndoo and Casson its South West Cricket rival Mortlake.

The good mates are thrilled about playing in the state championships together with Casson’s vice captaincy role a bonus.

"It is very exciting to know I have been picked by the coaches and they have seen me improve the last few years,” she said.

"I hope to lead the team behind Jess Field and hopefully be good at bowling and maybe score a few runs.”

Humphrey, who followed her dad Michael into the sport, said the Waves had the team to challenge.

“I think we’ll do all right. We’ve done pretty well the last couple of years,” she said.

“We’ve got a few top-agers and Jess Field is a very experienced cricketer, so she’ll be good as captain, and Taylah is very knowledgable with her cricket positions and tactics so she’ll be a very helpful vice captain too.”
