As the largest city in Australia’s second-most productive agricultural region, Warrnambool is a prime location to buy or sell cattle. And many people are willing to travel to the South-West Victorian Livestock Exchange in order to get the best price for their stock.
Business owner and cow breeder Jessa Fleming brought 110 cattle to sell in Warrnambool from Gorae West, near the South Australian border. She said that as the heart of the dairy region, Warrnambool was an ideal location for her dairy dispersal sale.
“We had to travel about an hour and a half to bring the cows here and the reason for that is that it’s more accessible to the greater dairying region,” Jessa said. “As well as local buyers a lot of people have travelled from northern Victoria or Gippsland and there’s been buyers from NSW and SA too. Given the current dairy climate, milk price and the instability in the dairy industry itself, the results of the stud side have been fantastic.”
A top price of $14,000 was paid for Fleyas Crushed Lolly, a dairy heifer. “Lolly’s genetic potential is huge,” Jessa said. “We’ve sold embryos from her in the past and she has great potential to continue breeding and to be a business investment.”
