This is just one of the questions you can discuss with Warrnambool’s girls guides on Saturday when they celebrate the group’s 90th year in the city.
“We’re not allowed to door knock anymore but we do sell them,” 15 year-old Emily Ward said.
On Saturday Emily and her fellow girl guides will host a trip down memory lane at the group’s headquarters on Manifold Street.
She joins others in celebrating 90 years since the first Warrnambool Brownie Unit was registered.
The occasion will be marked with an afternoon tea, memorabilia, speeches, a timeline and videos.
“There will also be an outdoor display with camp gadgets and a fire,” Miss Ward said.
Guides was first registered in Warrnamboool with a group of 20 members.
Having abolished girls from scout groups in England in 1909, Lord Robert Bayden-Powell commissioned his sister Agnes to create a girls-only group which became the girl guides.
The global social youth club made its way to south-west Victoria in 1928.
The group began undertaking activities such as cooking, baking, setting up tents, tying knots, completing challenges and achieving badges.
“The badges have changed over the years,” 15 year-old Anastasia Rea said. “And the promise and law has been updated from serving King and country to focusing on self-development. Guides is about having more responsibility and learning the skills of leadership.”
Girl Guides has continued to flourish world-wide.
“There are about ten million girl guides so we’re apart of something really big,” Miss Rea said.
Former girl guide Alissa Holmes has become a leader within the city’s 35-member group since she turned 18.
“It’s been a confidence thing for me. I’ve learnt leadership skills and life skills.” she said.
Saturday’s celebrations are open to all past guides, leaders and families who were involved with Warrnambool, Koroit and Allansford Girl Guides.
Activities begin at 1pm.
