Racing Victoria received 36 nominations for the $300,000 race when entries closed at noon on Tuesday. Twelve will face the starter’s gun.
The Jericho Cup, to be run on December 2, is a high-weight race for jumps jockeys organised to recreate a race held by Australian mounted troops in Palestine in World War I.
Warrnambool Racing Club chief executive Peter Downs said the number of entries was sensational.
“We’ve had a great response from trainers and owners for the inaugural running of the Jericho Cup,” he said. “It’s positive to see we’ve got some of the big stables with entries but it’s great that many smaller stables have also entered horses.”
Warrnambool trainer Symon Wilde entered Gold Medals, Under The Bridge and Doc Holliday while fellow trainer Michael Townsend nominated Barge And Charge. Downs said a consulation race worth $40,000 to be run over 4065 metres might be added to the program if 24 horses accepted for the Jericho Cup, which is expected to attract more than 4000 spectators.
“We’ve got our fingers crossed a $40,000 consulation race to the Jericho Cup will be added,” Downs said.
“We’ll need 24 horses to accept for the Jericho for the consulation race to be run.”
Final acceptances close next Tuesday.
