Sergeant Danny Brown, of Terang police, described the damage caused along three streets on Thursday night as some of the most senseless acts of criminal damage he’d seen in some time.
“In fact it’s the second time this year,” he said.
By driving along the side of the road, 11 traffic signs and seven council wheelie bins were mown down and damaged.
The streets that were targeted include Glenormiston Road, Blacks Drive and Factory Lane.
“What makes this damage deplorable is that it was a deliberate act on the offender’s behalf,” Sergeant Brown said.
“Believe it or not, it appears the driver has deliberately targeted traffic sign and council bins along these roads.
“It scares me.”
Sergeant Brown said he was angered that the reckless act happened at a time of night when it was not uncommon for local residents to be walking along the road.
He said that with poor street lighting in Noorat, the driver ran the risk of running down a resident.
“I know that’s a worst case scenario but it’s not out of the realms of possibility,” Sergeant Brown said.
“The driver of this vehicle is a danger not only to the community but to themselves.”
Terang police is calling for information about the offence and ask anyone with information to contact CrimeStoppers or the Terang station.
“There must have been some serious damage to the vehicle that was involved in this incident, so we ask if anyone observes a vehicle with damage to its front please make contact with police,” Sergeant Brown said.
Police have also reminded residents in the area to call 000 if they see or hear anything they feel police need to be informed about.
“Remember 000 is for ‘police attendance’, it doesn’t have to be an emergency.
