Robertson guided Penny To Sell to defeat Scherzoso by nearly a length with Owl On The Prowl holding down third place in the $45,000 race.
“I had my first race ride at Dunkeld 33 years ago,” the 50-year-old hoop said.
“Its very significant for me to come and win the Dunkeld Cup on Penny To Sell.
“Her trainer Mick Sell has been a great supporter of mine. I’ve rode a lot of winners for his stable over the years.
“I’ve lost count how many rides I’ve had in the Dunkeld Cup, the best I’ve done is run second on numerous occasions so to win the cup at this stage of my career is wonderful.”
Penny To Sell was back on the fence in the middle stages of the 1800-metre race but Robertson was confident.
“I was three back on the fence and off the bit at the 400-metre mark,” he said.
“Penny To Sell picked up rounding the home turn and took a gap and was just too good. She’s a tough mare. Mick’s done a great job with her.”
Sell said he parted with $20,000 to purchase Penny To Sell as a yearling from New Zealand.
“She’s been a great money-spinner for her connections,” Sell said.
“She’s won over $210,000 in stake-money. Penny To Sell is only the second runner I’ve had at Dunkeld. It’s a big thrill to win the cup.”
Penny To Sell was Robertson’s second winner on the eight-race card. He won on Moot for Jamie Edwards.
