Jack Dilley came to the crease with just one ball left in the game and his team one run behind.
An eventful last over had included a wicket off a no-ball and a run out off a free hit.
Allansford captain Chris Bant brought his field in to add layers to the degree of difficulty facing the inexperienced Dilley.
But to the delight of his teammates, Dilley found a way, flicking the ball off his legs for a two and handing the Beavers a memorable victory.
Perhaps the happiest Wesley-CBC player was Cameron Pyke, the team’s number 11 batsman and next man in.
“I was pretty thankful, I am in the team for my bowling and my bowling alone, batting just doesn’t come into,” he said with a laugh.
“I was sitting with Jack before he went out to bat and he was really nervous, he was shaking. He did a great job and had a huge smile on his face when he came back in. He has been on our radar for a while as he has come through the juniors.
“He can bowl leg-spin but at the moment he is in to add some extra depth to our middle and late order batting.”
While Pyke wasn’t required with the bat, he did make a contribution with the ball, finishing with 2-21 from his four overs.
He has spent time in both division one and two this season and is happy to play whatever role fits best for the club.
“My bowling is suited to the shorter forms of the game so that is when I am likely to be in division one,” he said.
“It might change a bit when the two-dayers come along, they might look at someone who can make some runs.”
Pyke is a familiar figure on the south-west sporting landscape, his skills covering three sports.
On top of his cricket, he plays football for North Warrnambool Eagles in the Hampden league and is goalkeeper for the Warrnambool Rangers soccer team.
He is a former coach of the Rangers and has just taken on another key role.
“I am the new president of the Rangers which I’m looking forward to,” he said.
“The clubs going well and I want to do my bit to help keep it moving forward.”
