Sergeant Paul Stanhope, of Hamilton police, said the 22-year-old was intercepted on Hamilton’s Cox Street about 1.45am on Saturday.
“A preliminary breath test was conducted, which returned a positive result and the man was conveyed to Hamilton police station,” he said.
An evidentiary breath test returned a reading of 0.176.
The man’s licence was immediately suspended and his car impounded. He will appear in court at a later date.
Sergeant Stanhope said the reading was concerning.
“We have a lot of people in town getting ready to go to the Dunkeld races and it’s disappointing to see someone willing to drive with that sort of reading,” he said.
“Hopefully that’s the last of this sort of behaviour for today. There is always someone you can ring to pick you up, no matter what time.”
The Dunkeld Cup kicks off at 11am today and is expected to draw a crowd of about 10,000.
Police have urged punters to have fun but be safe.
