The 23-year-old, who is a member of Warrnambool and Port Fairy golf clubs, will complete her PGA professional golf traineeship in Melbourne at her third golfing home, Commonwealth, under club pro Ben Davey.

“It will be a new venture for me and I feel like I am ready to take that next step,” Flaherty said.

“I have played a lot of amateur golf tournaments across Australia and worked in a golf shop here (Port Fairy) for the last five years and it’s time to take that next step.”

Flaherty, a four-time club champion at Warrnambool and once at Port Fairy, will work full-time in Commonwealth’s golf shop as well as playing and studying. 

“The study is a mixture of all things golf, like rules and how to prepare for events. Basically everything involved with the golf industry,” she said.

“They will teach me how to run a club and stuff like that and about how to coach and also help with how I play.”

The south-west resident said the move had been made easier by her constant visits to the Melbourne-based club, which sits on the world renowned sand belt golfing region in the south-eastern suburb of Oakleigh South.

“I think it will be (a bit of a change) but I have spent a lot of my time in Melbourne, having been a member at Commonwealth for four years,” she said. 

“I sort of have my own little family up there which is nice. I won’t be living too far from the club.”
