Confidence plays a big part in any sport and I suppose my confidence is pretty high on the back of a few other solid knocks.
I’m really enjoying my cricket at Creek. The club has excellent structures in place and we’ve got some very talented young players coming through the ranks.
The future looks really bright for the club.
I would say the club has gone to another level after winning the Division 1 flag last season.
What are your memories of the Division 1 flag last season?
One of the funny things about the flag win over Allansford was I won the toss. Winning the toss can often play a big part in the result of a game.
I think it was only the third toss that I had won in the last two years.
We batted first and were in trouble at six wickets for 32 runs.
Paul Walker and I put on a 70-run partnership, which helped us get to 130 runs. I was lucky to make 65 runs.
We ended up getting Allansford out for 80 runs.
I’ve got to give credit to Allansford and the umpires for allowing the game to continue, as we all wanted a result.
Where did your cricket career begin?
My dad played with Wesley and ended up coaching juniors there.
My brother played there, and it was only natural that my junior days were spent playing for Wesley.
I was 13 years old when I played in an under 17 premiership with Wesley.
David Tucker and Ryan McArdle played key roles in the junior premiership win.
My dad and brother joined Nestles and I played there also.
I can still remember my first game of senior cricket was with Nestles when I was 15 years old.
We played Portland Colts and I made a duck and one in the two innings which I batted.
I was fortunate in my time at Nestles to play with some very good players who had an impact on my career, including Brett Eldridge and Ross Corbett.
I was taught to play tough, hard cricket at Nestles and I believe that has helped me during my career.
I played in a losing grand final with Nestles back in 2011-12. West Warrnambool defeated us. Brett Eldridge was our coach.
West Warrnambool beat us convincingly, but the result was hard to stomach as we were undefeated leading into the finals.
Cam, what year did you join Russells Creek?
I started playing with Creek in the 2016-17 season.
I just needed a new challenge, so I decided to join Creek.
I had a young family and I thought it would be good if I could play down at Jetty Flat.
It’s a lovely oval with excellent facilities.
The club appointed me captain and I think that responsibility has really helped my cricket and it’s helped my mature a lot as a person.
I realise I’ve got to set an example not only for our players, but also because I’m representing the club.
We were runners-up to Woodford in the 2016-17 season.
They just beat us, but we made amends winning the flag last year.
Why do you think Creek has had so much success over the last few years?
I think it’s because Creek has a bit more depth at the club. I reckon we bat better deeper down the order then some of the other clubs in the association.
I think the overall competition of cricket in the association has improved over the last few years.
The saddest thing that has happened to cricket is footy overrides our sport.
Have you represented Warrnambool in Country Week cricket on many occasions?
I’ve represented Warrnambool on six occasions and love it every time.
It’s an honour to go down to Melbourne to represent Warrnambool against other associations from all over the state.
Country Week gives the local blokes the chance to play on excellent turf wickets against some top cricketers.
The week is also a good time for local players to mix with blokes you play against on Saturdays.
I’ve found Country Week forms great bonds between the group of players who play for Warrnambool.
During your cricket career you’ve had a stint playing overseas. Can you tell me about that?
I went over to England and played for a side called Scarcroft during the 2011-12 season. It’s just near Leeds.
It was a wonderful experience. The wickets were a lot slower then over here.
I made some great friendships while I was over in England and I’m still friends to this day with many of the people.
I also went down and played with Essendon in Melbourne during the 2012-13 season. I played two games in the seniors, but the majority of my games were in the seconds.
We missed the finals. There was part of me that wanted to stay in Melbourne, but I had better work opportunities here so I headed home.
Cam, you mentioned that you played with Essendon back in 2012-13. Have you changed your thoughts of going back to play cricket in Melbourne on the back of your success here over the last few years?
Not really. I’m pretty comfortable in Warrnambool.
It’s a great lifestyle in Warrnambool. Hayley and I have two young children plus family and friends, so I don’t think we’ll be moving anywhere in the future.
Who would be some of the best players that you’ve seen play cricket in Warrnambool?
I’ve got to rate Brett Eldridge as one of the best.
He was a star player. He had the ability to bat and bowl and was an excellent fielder.
Dustin Drew is another top player and I rate Nick Butters highly.
