The Great South West Walk will receive a $55,000 grant to develop a new website and marketing plan for the iconic walk if a Matthew Guy Government is elected on November 24.
The Friends of the Great South West Walk is a voluntary organisation, which receives support from the Glenelg shire, Parks Victoria and Landcare volunteers, but receives no government funding to manage and maintain this key tourist attraction with huge potential for growth.
Around 100 volunteers work 4000 hours a year to maintain the tracks in safe and good walking condition completing regular maintenance work such as scrub trimming and mowing, construction of lookouts, staircases, bridges, gravel paths, marketing, administration and organisation.
Funding from a Liberal Nationals Government will help the group promote the walk to a wider audience and support the hard working volunteer committee in their endeavours to promote the walk to the world.
Opposition spokeswoman for Tourism and Major Events, Heidi Victoria, said a Liberal Nationals Government would change the direction of tourism marketing in Victoria.
"And provide coastal tourism operators with better support to promote the diverse offerings that showcase the Great South West Walk as a must-see destination," she said.
"Only the Liberal Nationals have a strong plan to grow Victoria to create a state of cities, not a city-state, and to do this we need to bring jobs to our coastal towns," she said.
South West Coast sitting member and candidate Roma Britnell said the Great South West Walk was one of our region’s tourism gems.
"The 250 kilometre walking trail takes visitors through our spectacular hardwood forests, across ocean side cliff tops and along the Glenelg River," she said.
"The volunteers do a fantastic job making sure everything is up to scratch and visitors have a magnificent experience in South West Coast. Funding for a new website would help the group promote the walk to the world and boost eco-tourism in the region.
"With Budj Bim on the cusp of world heritage listing, more and more people interested in eco and cultural tourism will be looking to visit this part of the world – It’s important our tourism attractions and facilities are ready to capture their attention," she said.
