Portland police Sergeant Sean Elliot said a 43-year-old man was travelling on the Princes Highway near Tyrendarra at 2.20am when his vehicle rolled down an embankment.
The grey Hyundai sedan traveled about 100 metres and rolled once before coming to a rest.
“The motorist says he swerved to miss a kangaroo and has lost control of the vehicle,” Sergeant Elliot said.
“He walked out of the car with no injuries. He was very lucky.”
Sergeant Elliot said the driver was unlicensed and the vehicle unregistered.
He said there was no alcohol or drugs involved.
Meanwhile, a 21-year-old Portland male was caught driving an unregistered vehicle just two hours earlier.
Sergeant Elliot said the driver was intercepted in a Holden Commodore sedan on Portland’s Learmonth Street at 12.18am.
“Driving an unregistered vehicle is serious,” he said.
“Without registration, you aren’t covered for compulsory third party insurance through the TAC and you will be fined $806.
“Every police officer has now been issued with a personal tablet so that they can check your registration at any time. You won’t get away with it.”
