Brett Raymond O’Neill, 39, of Longmore Street, pleaded guilty in Warrnambool Magistrates Court to burglary, theft, failing to answer bail, dealing with suspected proceeds of crime, assault with a weapon and driving and weapon offences.

He was sentenced to 17 months and 16 days in jail, with a non-parole period of 10 months.

He has spent 221 days on remand in custody.

Police said O’Neill’s offending spanned five months.

In October last year he was caught driving without a licence and with a tomahawk axe in his vehicle. 

Then in February he threatened a mental health worker with a screw driver and was caught driving a stolen Ford station wagon erratically at Cressy. 

On March 30 he broke into a property in Warrnambool’s Merrivale Drive and stole a TV, hard drive and Easter eggs valued at $220. 

Police attended O’Neill’s home the following day and located the stolen TV, as well as power tools believed to be stolen and a loaded pistol under his bed. 

Barrister Cameron Baker said O’Neill no longer associated with the same people he did at the time of the offending and intended to live with his family upon his release.
