Bella Rosa defeated Lankan Star by half a head with Champagne Boom a half neck away in third place in the group 3 $150,000 Bumble Stakes.
The Winslow-raised Maher said the result was a super victory for the owners and his stable.
“It was a huge win by a filly having her first start in those conditions,” he said.
“She’s been well educated. I’ve got to give a lot of credit to our breaker Adrian Corboy.
“He’s done a sensational job with her and so have the staff in the stable.
“She is a very valuable filly for her connections now she’s won a group race at her debut.
“We’ll probably aim her towards the Blue Diamond in March.
“We’ve focused on getting new young horses into the stable and it appears to be paying dividends as we had a two-year-old winner in Sydney last month.”
Warrnambool businessman Colin McKenna is among Bella Rosa’s owners.
