Moyne Shire council hosted the event, which included face painting, children’s activities, live music and canapes at The Wharf restaurant for a large crowd of locals. 

The takeaway arm of the business was also operating for those wanting fish and chips while overlooking the Moyne River.

There was a historic boats display and photos from the Port Fairy Historical Society detailing the area’s development over the years. 

Mr Tehan officially cut the ribbon, declaring the building open.

He said the building would generate economic activity for the town and the operators are planning to double their staff from 15 to about 30 after just two weeks.

Mayor Mick Wolfe said it was a splendid building.

“It’s been a long time coming. It’s been a vision for decades,” Cr Wolfe said. 

“It was  a great opportunity for the community to come and celebrate another icon in Port Fairy.” 

The much-anticipated Port Fairy wharf building has been recognised with a Master Builders of Victoria award and is also in for a national award.

Mr Tehan was kept busy on Sunday afternoon, also attending the official opening of the refurbished club rooms at the Dennington Recreation Reserve.

Long-time committeeman David Kelson said the extension almost doubled the size of the original club rooms at a cost of $758,000.

He said the services upgrades alone cost $260,000.
