The inaugural Kerr & Co. Livestock feature spring cattle sale at the Mortlake saleyards on Thursday attracted strong demand for the big yarding of 3411 head.

The sale, which had formerly been held at Hamilton, had grown steers selling to a top of 316c/kg ((averaging 418 kilograms, $1641/head) and grown heifers selling to a top of 287c/kg (av 448kg, $1320).
Weighed weaner steers sold to a top of 333c/kg (av 341kg, $1256) and weighed weaner heifers to a top of 291c/kg (av 263.8kg, $1107).
Craig Pertzel from Kerr & Co said the yarding was described by some local Mortlake producers as the best seen in Mortlake in 25 years.
A highlight of the sale was the 1500 spring-drop steers with a pen from from Kilkenny Pastoral, Hawkesdale winning the David Powling memorial shield for the best presented pen for the fourth year in a row.
The pen of 17 Angus steers fetched 330c/kg for Kilkenny Pastoral’s Roache family.
Kerr & Co said it was very pleased with the buying support that came from South Australia, NSW, throughout Victoria and locally, and especially from major feedlotters.
Kerr & Co acknowledged their clients’ support in relocating the sale to the Western VIctorian Livestock Exchange at Mortlake.
