But when the opportunity comes knocking you need to be in the position to take advantage of what is being offered.
Warrnambool’s Geoff McLaren and Peter ‘Cork’ Walsh were offered shares in Humidor by their good mate Darren Weir back in October 2016 and what has followed for the two buddies has been nothing short of incredible.
Humidor has run against the top echelon of horses in feature Australian races, including the 2017 Cox Plate, Caulfield and Melbourne cups in their time of ownership with the son of Teofilo.
On Saturday, the six-year-old runs against the wonder mare Winx who is trying to win a record-breaking fourth Cox Plate and her 29th consecutive victory.
It will be the fourth time that Humidor has lined up against Winx.
McLaren has his fingers crossed the result may be different at the end of the $5 million race at Moonee Valley.
“Cork and I have had an amazing journey with Humidor,” McLaren said.
“It was all about being in the right spot at the right time.
“His first Australian start was at Flemington in October 2016 and Weiry came over after the race and said ‘there’s a few shares available Humidor’.
“We just said put us in and the rest is history.
“Both of us have to pinch ourselves with what Humidor has done on the track.
“We’ve got to give all the credit to Weiry and his staff at Warrnambool, they have done an sensational job.”
Humidor finished only millimetres in running second behind Winx in the 2017 Cox Plate.
McLaren is hoping for a change of luck in this year’s race.
“I think we’re going better than last year,” he said.
“But they all tell us that Winx is better.
“She’s beaten us on each occasion but racing is a funny game – you just never know the result until the race is over.”
Humidor has amassed more than $3.5 million in stakemoney during his career.
