The free, family fun day on October 27 will be held at the Port Campbell Arts Space, on Lord Street, Port Campbell, from 10am until 3pm.
The Flying Bookworm theatre troupe will perform two shows on the day, including retellings of much-loved children’s stories.
Nic Dacomb will present his Krazy Koala puppet show and provide an interactive circus space for children to explore.
Indigenous educator Tinika Clifford will tell traditional yarns and provide indigenous art activities for children.
There will also be face painting and giant bubble experience courtesy of Roaming Rainbows.
Throughout the day local identities and educators will share stories specially selected for the Let’s Read program.
Lions club members will provide a sausage sizzle, cold drinks and tea and coffee at a small cost.
The day has been funded with a $30,000 grant from by Beach Energy.
The grant has also enabled the shire to buy books specially selected for the Let’s Read program and trained all its educators to deliver the program.
Corangamite mayor Jo Beard said Let’s Read was a national early literacy initiative that promotes reading with children from birth to five years.
“Reading is a basic tool for success in school and employment so promoting that core life skill while a child’s brain is still growing can really set them up,” Cr Beard said.
“Research shows good reading skills can lead to better performance at school, improved self-esteem, and better health and social outcomes.
“Part of Let’s Read encourages parents reading to their very young kids which build strong family relationships and teaches the children socialisation skills like talking, listening, responding, sharing a joke and empathising with characters in the story.”
“It’s great to see Beach Energy being a supportive corporate citizen and investing in the next generation and future prosperity of the Shire,” Cr Beard said.
