The iconic Liebig Street cafe will mark the milestone on October 31 and owner Diane Coates said items from the cafe’s original menu would be for sale for 1948 prices.
“From 12pm to 2pm and 6pm to 8pm we will put on our original menu that’s on the back wall so if they come in with the original coins, shillings and six pence, they will be able to get anything off that,” Mrs Coates said. “If they don’t have the money we’ll give a 10 per cent discount off our normal menu as well.”
She said the business, which was run by the McLeod family until eight years ago, had always focused on wholesome traditional food.
“People like the home-style food which is what we try to have. We still have lamb’s fry and bacon and the veggie soup we do is the same original recipe.
“We can still do all of that today which is pretty amazing with a few new things to spice it up."
She said they had tried to keep the cafe’s traditional feel and the booths, which were made by one of the McLeod brothers in 1948, still remained.
“There’s lots of stories and secrets,” she said. “The booths give that illusion of privacy. I wonder how many secrets have been told in these. There’d be a lot you’d think.
“We’re very proud to have stood the test of time. There’s not many cafes in Victoria or Australia that would have been around for 70 years.”
