Gurnett shot a round of 72 on Saturday to hold a two-shot lead on Scott Boschen ahead next weekend’s double-header with round two on Saturday and three on Sunday.
“It’s good to get off to a good start and looking forward to the next few rounds,” he said. “It doesn’t concern me (to be leading), I’m just happy being in contention. I just have to play patiently and not make any mistakes.”
Last year’s B grade winner Ray Mathews finished his opening A reserve round with an 83 to lead Josh Reichman by just three shots.
Brad Pole (83) holds a narrow lead out of the first 18 holes of the B grade championship with Peter Chamberlain breathing down his neck only one shot behind.
Peter Keane (95) is also locked in a close battle as he leads the C grade by one shot over Phil Irvine.
