Stewards said Trap For Fools had been stabled at Darren Weir’s Warrnambool on-course stables where McLean is the stable foreman instead of at his own stables at Yangery when the five-year-old was entered for the race.
Trap For Fools was one of the main hopes in the betting before his scratching at 2.15pm.
Stewards ordered the scratching under local rule 27A which stipulates a horse must be stabled where it is trained unless permission is given by the stewards.
Meanwhile, Weir’s three runners in the $5 million Caulfield Cup were unplaced.
Kings Will Dream ran fifth after blundering the start while Gallic Chieftain finished in eighth spot.
Gallic Chieftain, who is part-owned by some Warrnambool residents including Chris Kol, Marcus Norton, Luke Attrill and Matthew Owen, picked up $120,000 in prizemoney for his connections with his effort. Weir’s other Caulfield Cup runner Night’s Watch ran 16th.
Verry Elleegant, trained at Weir’s Warrnambool satellite stable, took a major step forward to the $1 million VRC Oaks on November 8, in winning the Ethereal Stakes on Saturday.
The New Zealand-bred filly has notched up a win and a minor placing from her two starts for the Weir stable.
