The supporters gathered at the Koroit railway station and walked a section of the Warrnambool-Port Fairy rail trail carrying illuminated paper lanterns to show support for Garry MacDonald who is in remission for the cancer.
The idea for the ‘Light the Night” event came from Koroit’s Irish Festival committee of which Garry MacDonald’s wife Adele is a member.
Mrs MacDonald, who was at the event with her three young children, said the family was overwhelmed by the turnout.
She said the festival committee members had been very supportive of her family throughout her husband’s journey, doing jobs such as maintaining the garden at the family’s home.
Many families enjoyed a barbecue dinner at the railway station before the event that raised money for the Leukaemia Foundation’s work to beat blood cancer.
