Councillor Sue Cassidy confirmed to The Standard she wants the top job.

Current mayor Robert Anderson will not throw his hat in the ring for the position, nor will David Owen or state election candidates Kylie Gaston and Mike Neoh.

Crs Tony Herbert and Peter Hulin remain unconfirmed possibilities. 

Cr Cassidy said since she was elected to council in 2016 she had been involved in numerous committees and organisations including the Liebig Street leadership group and is chair of the health and well-being committee and chair of the Reid Oval redevelopment. 

In her personal life she is on the committees and boards of The Lookout, the Ice Challenge, Business Professional Women, Lyndoch Living and Daybreak Rotary.

She owns hairdressing salon Unisexcuts and employs 10 people.

“I will continue to advocate for more funding to complete the Warrnambool Special Developmental School, get the Reid Oval works started, funding for the Warrnambool Base Hospital and for the breakwater wall and safer launching ramp,” she said.

“I look forward to working with and supporting our new CEO. There is so much to do, we are going into exciting times for our city, especially with both sides of government announcing some fantastic projects.”

Cr Cassidy said she was seeking support from her fellow six councillors. 

“I’m hoping that my only other female councillor will support me, especially with her running for the state government under the Andrews Government,” she said.

“This party has always stated they want to empower women to higher leadership positions, as they are fully aware we usually miss out.” 

Cr Hulin is looking forward to the future. 

“I believe the council needs a fresh approach as we are now fortunate to be moving forward with a new CEO in the new year,” he said.

“I think a new mayor with a new approach will take this city forward.”
