Chris Kol, Marcus Norton, Matthew Owen and Luke Attrill are among a group of locals who have shares in Gallic Chieftain which runs in the $5 million Caulfield Cup on Saturday.
The Darren Weir-trained Gallic Chieftain won the Warrnambool Cup in May.
Kol has his fingers crossed the six-year-old will run well in the time-honoured group 1 race at Caufield.
“It’s just a big thrill to have a runner in the Caulfield Cup,” Kol said.
“We’ve just got our fingers crossed that Gallic Chieftain goes well. We’re not expecting him to win.
“Gallic Chieftain has been a great horse for his owners.
“His last effort to run fourth in the Herbert Power was very good. Boom Time ran fourth in the Herbert Power last year and came out and won the Caulfield Cup. We’re just hoping history may repeat itself.”
Gallic Chieftain, a $41 chance in the early betting markets, will be joined by Warrnambool stablemates Kings Will Dream and Night’s Watch who are also running for the Weir stable in the 2400-metre race.
Jarrod McLean, the foreman for Weir, said Kings Will Dream had a faultless preparation into the Caulfield Cup.
“We can’t get Kings Will Dream any fitter,” he said.
“He won the Mornington Cup in March and that gave him the ticket into the Caulfield Cup so we’ve been able to plan his program meticulously. He’s in great order. Kings Will Dream has drawn an excellent barrier and Craig Williams is one of the best jockeys.
“I’m sure Kings Will Dream is the best of the locals but I’m a bit worried about a couple of the imports.”
Weir’s Warrnambool stable has eight runners on the 10-race program while former local trainers Ciaron Maher and Mitch Freedman saddle up contenders.
McLean himself accepted with Trap For Fools in a $150,000 race.
