Koroit police Sergeant Pat Day said emergency services were contacted about noon Saturday alerting them to the oil spill on the Princes Highway for about 300 metres, west of Port Fairy.
He said Country Fire Authority units from Yambuk, Port Fairy and Koroit districts assisted VicRoads staff to put sand on the spill after efforts to wash it off proved ineffective.
"We directed traffic for about four-and-a-half hours on Saturday afternoon," Sergeant Day said.
"We stopped all traffic and directed drivers. It was a decent spill and we have no idea what caused it.
"The CFA and VicRoads had difficulty getting the sand to stick to it."
Sergeant Day said it was fortunate no one crashed.
"There was a suggestion the spill was there earlier on Saturday," he said.
"We were a bit worried because there were a lot of motorcyclists around on Saturday and the spill was only just on the west side of Port Fairy through two double line S-bends."
Sergeant Day requested anyone with information about the cause of the spill to contact the Koroit or Port Fairy police stations.
