The state coalition announced its ambitious vision of creating a $19 billion high speed regional rail network that would cut in half the travel time between Warrnambool and Melbourne.
The announcement lacked specifics but it is the type of thinking we need from our leaders. Policies suiting the election needs of individuals and parties have become too commonplace.
At the local level, Warrnambool Art Gallery director Vanessa Gerrans floated the need to open talks on a vision for the gallery. University students have identified a series of ideas to transform Warrnambool’s cramped gallery and under-utilised Civic Green. There are many possibilities.
It’s important we start thinking about the future because revamping or rebuilding the gallery will be a long-term project. We have an opportunity to leave a legacy for our children and grandchildren, just like former city engineer Ed Johnson, who came up with plans to create Lake Pertobe in 1975.
