The city has secured the hosting of the 2018 BMX Victoria Open State Championships which is expected to attract up to 1000 of Australia’s best BMX stars from all over Victoria and interstate.
The three day event will be held from November 16-18 at the Warrnambool BMX Club, which is located at Jetty Flat, near Lake Pertobe.
We expect to see around 800 participants from Victoria, 200 from interstate as well as over 1500 spectators.

Warrnambool City Council’s visitor economy manager David McMahon said securing the state championships was a fabulous testament to Warrnambool’s capability to attract state, national and world class sporting events and is a great addition to the city’s event calendar.
“BMX is a family friendly sport and encourages participation from all ages, so this event is a great fit for Warrnambool,” he said.
“We expect to see around 800 participants from Victoria, 200 from interstate as well as over 1500 spectators.
“Events like this mean serious business for Warrnambool. They attract tourists, keep local businesses busy, provide branding benefits for the city and inspire more kids to get involved and join grassroots clubs.”
Mr McMahon said the BMX Championships will contribute to what is expected to be a busy shoulder season for the city with the inaugural Warrnambool Oktoberfest, Regional Gymnastics Championships, Warrnambool Show and the Warrnambool Gift contributing to the local economy.
BMX Victoria president Cameron Murray said he was excited to work with the council and the BMX Club to host the event.
“The Warrnambool BMX Club facility provided the best possible infrastructure and council support to deliver a world-class event,” he said.
Warrnambool BMX Club president Darryl McKenna said it gave the club the ability to showcase its facilities and the sport to the south-west community.
“It is also a great opportunity for the club to develop capacity and earn funds to put back into the improvements of the facility,” he said.
On Sunday the Warrnambool BMX Classic was held, with more than 350 riders competing.
