The Hampden league export spent two seasons at the Demons after he was drafted with pick 64 in the 2016 national draft.
But the ex-North Warrnambool Eagles small forward was overlooked for senior selection, spending his time playing for the club’s VFL affiliate Casey Demons where he was turned into a defender.
He missed Casey’s grand final last month due to suspension.
Johnstone, 20, was drafted as a small forward after impressing for Scotch College, where he was a boarder, and TAC Cup club Oakleigh Chargers.
He was also part of North Warrnambool Eagles’ first senior grand final team in 2016, playing in their loss to Koroit just months before he landed at Melbourne.
Demons general manager of football operations Josh Mahoney said any list change was hard.
“These decisions are obviously difficult, given the competition for spots on our list,” he told Melbourne Media.
“On behalf of everyone at the club, we would like to all players for their hard-work and commitment during their time with us.”
