The hip hip program was part of the Brophy Family and Youth Service’s project Explorabool.
Brophy’s youth engagement and development worker Danielle Gladman said the aim of the project was to help young people connect and participate in their community.
“We create and facilitate free local experiences for young people so that they can connect with their community and we create a safe and inclusive space for them to do that,” she said.
“Every time we have a session we ask young people what they want, what they want to be a part of in the community and then we try and facilitate that experience for them.”
Ms Gladman said it was hoped the project would run for three years with the project getting strong support from young people. She said last term a fitness experience at Archie Graham Community Centre had proved popular with young people attending six weeks of one hour fitness sessions. The experience was also supported by Sungold Milk, Baker’s Delight and the Capital Cinema.
“It’s a real community collaboration,” Ms Gladman said. “All of our experiences are capped to a level that creates a safe space for the instructors and the young people.”
The experiences are open to young people aged 12 to 25. For more information visit the Explorabool Facebook page, Instagram account or contact Brophy.
