Welcome to our new weekly message to you. It’s been a huge week with the introduction of digital subscriptions that underline the changing face of regional journalism.
I grew up with a copy of The Standard on the kitchen table every morning. The newspaper was the source of local information and news. In the good times and the bad, The Standard was the oracle.
The way it told stories connected the region. It helped a city-raised kid understand the issues affecting farmers, the impacts of rain and droughts, the birth of our whale-watching industry and inspiring achievements by south-west residents. Those stories inspired me to become a journalist.
The way we tell those stories has changed significantly over the years but not our intent and passion for our community.
Thanks to technology, our audience, you, have told us you still want those stories but increasingly through devices at your fingertips.
That’s why we have invested heavily in our digital journalism in the past three or so years. But it’s not cheap. That’s why we have put a price on our digital content. Subscriptions will help us continue employing staff, who live, work and invest in the region, to tell the stories that matter to you. Your support and understanding of our role in the community has been humbling.
The result isn’t perfect some of the time but we are committed to this community.
Thanks again for your support by signing up.
Here’s a few of my favourite stories from the week.
Don’t hesitate in giving us your feedback. Have a good week.
