She said the cost of study and extra equipment needed for the course was a financial hurdle for her and without a scholarship she would have “more than likely stayed in my comfort zone” at home.
“I was very fortunate to be a recipient of a scholarship which has allowed me to strive towards my dream,” she said.
Ms Elliott said she had broadened her horizons and could now aim high. “The world has a dedicated marine biologist in the wings.”
Applications are now open for more than 60 scholarships available to students beginning their studies at Warrnambool in 2019.
The scholarships are for undergraduate degrees in Education (Primary), Health, Science (Marine Biology), Psychological Science and Commerce and Law.
Campus director Alistair McCosh said about one in three students would receive a scholarship, which were valued at up to $7000 each. Successful applicants are also eligible for an accommodation discount of 10 per cent.
“It will ensure they can commence their study without the burden of financial stress, which is really important in them getting a great start and achieving success,” Mr McCosh said.
Without them, some students would not be able to undertake tertiary study, he said. The scholarships are provided by local business, industry, and philanthropic trusts. For more information go to deakin.edu.au
