Veteran jumper Urban Explorer heads the weights in the time-honoured Great Western Steeplechase for Eric Musgrove. Urban Explorer will carry 69 kilograms in the 3600-metre chase after the three-kilogram claim for Rob David.  Mannertone, Sir Lopez and Surging Wave loom as the main chances in what looks to be an enthralling final race for the jumps season.

Promising first-season jumper Ascot Red will attempt to win his third consecutive jumping race for the Ciaron Maher-David Eustace stable when he runs in an open hurdle, while 10 runners face the starter in a maiden hurdle.

Warrnambool trainer Geoff Withers is hoping for a better performance from Unrealistic in the Coleraine Cup, following a disappointing first-up run in a restricted race at Casterton. Unrealistic ran sixth in the 1400-metre race but should be better suited to the 1800 metres of the Coleraine Cup.

“I just thought he might have run better at Casterton,” Withers said. “He won the Dunkeld Cup last year and we’re going down that path again this year. The big weight never helped him at Casterton. The Coleraine Cup is a tougher race but he’s done in the weights, which is an advantage.”

The first race at Coleraine is scheduled to start at 12.55pm.
