People interested in environmentally friendly properties can visit the Peterborough Strawbale Home (56 Halladale Street) to view a recently completed straw bale home, then travel to Cudgee (Lot 6 Hallowells Road) to view an earthship in the making and onto Wangoom (363 St Mary’s Road) to see how owners have converted an unused stable into a bespoke sustainable small dwelling named River Minka.
Sustainable House Day is a national event and River Minka is located a short stroll from the Hopkins River.
The original idea presented to Live Architecture was to relocate the existing stable on the site to a more prominent position where it could get river views.
The stable was being prepared to be moved in one piece, but then it was decided to dismantle and reconstruct it.
The original dimensions and features of the stable were honoured in the reconstruction, with two added wings to create a small set sustained dwelling.
The really special features of the dwelling are in the upcycled materials and details used by the talented creative owners, while another sustainable feature is the external radial sawn natural edge weatherboards.
The owners and architect will be conducting tours of River Minka from 10am to 4pm by a gold coin donation.
Wannon Water will also showcase how it is water wise and energy efficient. A free bus with limited seats will depart from the Wannon Water Car park at 10am and 1pm.
The day runs from 10am-4pm.
