Warrnambool City Council posted on social media the day had been called off due to ‘public sentiment’.
“We’ll revisit participating in this global event next year,” a Facebook post says.
“The strong sentiment around the event was noted and we were mindful of the potential impact on the members of the community who had enthusiastically created some excellent installations for the day.
“We do believe Park(ing) Day offers great possibilities for Warrnambool and would be an exciting activation and promotion of the city centre.”
PARK(ing) Day was set to hit the city on Friday with car parks to be transformed into creative places for people, not cars.
On PARK(ing) Day a car park is still hired and money is placed in the meter, but instead of using the land to park a car, it is used to create an opportunity for social interaction through a wide range of activations and installations.
Installations in other cities have included free health clinics, art galleries, public parks, demonstration gardens, outdoor games, public reading rooms and recycling centres.
