Mrs Britnell said regions like South West Coast would benefit greatly under the Liberal National’s approach and the comprehensive plan it has to decentralise the state.
“We have a vision for a state of cities, not a city state,” she said.
“I’ve already been working hard with local councils and the Federal Government in an effort to encourage migrants to establish themselves in our region.
“The challenges we have in our region are also our biggest opportunity. We have a real reason for people to come here, and I know when they do, they will fall in love with our incredible lifestyle and want to stay.
“What we need though is a plan to improve infrastructure to make that incentive even sweeter.
“It is only the Liberal Nationals who understand there is life beyond the West Gate Bridge, and only the Liberal Nationals who are committed to grow regional Victoria.”
Mrs Britnell said a Liberal Nationals Government would establish a Population Commission with a board of seven people appointed by the Premier and serviced by a secretariat based in the Department of Premier & Cabinet.
The Population Commission will work across state and federal governments to assess and determine the likely population levels for Victoria for the years 2025, 2030, 2040, 2050, 2060, 2070, 2080, 2090 and 2100.
The commission will also work with local councils to determine how population is likely to change over the same time periods.
And how it should be managed in each Local Government Area including regional cities to ensure that Victoria and Melbourne’s population growth is sustainable and maintains liveability.
