The English singer-songwriter burst onto the scene in 1968 with his debut album Eight Frames a Second but he’s best known for his 974 classic Streets of London and the well-known Irish immigration tale, From Clare to Here.
During his career, McTell has played at some of the world’s biggest festivals and alongside artists such as Jimi Hendrix, Joan Baez and Leonard Cohen.
Port Fairy Folk Festival director Caroline Moore said she was thrilled to have McTell on the bill.
“It’s no secret Ralph is in his 70s but he is still on song and at the top of his game so it’s a privilege to have such a legend coming to our gorgeous little town,” Ms Moore said.
“He has played all over the world and his songs and performances have transcended generations.
“Of course Streets of London is one of those iconic songs that everyone knows, it will be exciting to hear it right here in Port Fairy.”
Tickets for the festival, which will be held on the weekend of March 8-11, are on sale, with the first allocation to festival subscribers selling out within just five days.
The early bird ticket allocation is now open and Ms Moore said sales remain strong.
“We have sold over 50 per cent of our festival tickets already,” she said.
“Our early bird tickets are ticking along beautifully and we are blessed to have such a loyal audience.
“It is an audience we never take for granted and we work hard to put together the best line-up we can each year.
“The Port Fairy Folk Festival has a wonderful reputation over its history for bringing performers, Australian and international, into the spotlight and helping ignite their careers.
“It’s a great legacy and one we want to continue to foster.”
Other artists on their way to Port Fairy in 2019 include Sharon Shannon, Mick Thomas and the Roving Commission, Greta Stanley, Nick Barker, Renee Geyer, Tami Neilson, Mary Coughlan, The Naked Waiters and The Weeping Willows.
