Warrnambool police Sergeant James van Engelen said the offender, a 26-year-old Warrnambool man, was in the smoking area of the Highline Bar in Warrnambool on Saturday night.
He said the offender began repeatedly pushing a chair into a 24-year-old Warrnambool man, who was known to him.
"The offender has then thrown the victim to the ground," Sergeant van Engelen said.
"When the victim got up, the offender punched him in the mouth, causing a tooth to fall out and cut his mouth."
Security intervened and the offender left the premises.
The victim attended the Warrnambool Base Hospital for treatment.
Sergeant van Engelen said the offender was identified by a witness and would be interviewed by police in the coming days.
The man is expected to be charged with recklessly cause injury.
Anyone with information should call Warrnambool police on 5560 1333 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
