High levels of per- and polyfluoroalkyl chemicals (PFAS) were discovered in groundwater on properties neighbouring the Penshurst training site about three years ago.
Clean up works began last year and the site was closed in March.
Works included paving of the open-air training area, a storm water diversion, a new dam, and the construction of new drainage systems and water management measures on-site.
Acting Deputy Chief Officer James Dullard said he was excited to see the campus reopen for CFA and other emergency services to use.
“The Penshurst campus is now a more modern facility with upgraded capability which will enhance our regional training and ensure our emergency services have the skills and experience needed to protect their local communities,” he said.
CFA Executive Director of infrastructure services Anthony Ramsay said CFA was pleased with the outcome of the newly improved site.
“We thank everyone for their cooperation and support during construction. We’re reopening the Penshurst VEMTC with new and improved facilities ready to deliver comprehensive and innovative training programs for local emergency services,” he said.
“We worked closely with EPA, the Southern Grampians Shire Council and VicRoads throughout the process to ensure that our campus complies with the latest environmental and safety standards, and continues to be an invaluable asset in the region.”
