“My main focus was to be loud and clear,” Mr McDonald said. “Not to burst their ear drums, but so people pay attention and listen.”
Arriving early at the Victorian Livestock Exchange, in Pakenham, Mr McDonald watched the early sales to help calm his nerves.
“I had a look at what I would be selling and get a bit of a price guide,” Mr McDonald said.
“I controlled my nerves pretty well I thought, I was happy with how I sold but I thought I could do a bit better.”
“It’s all a great experience, and to actually do well in it, it’s such a great boost for my career.”
He said that his fifth position, out of the ten competitors, was important for him to get a gauge on the market and see which sellers were purchasing.
Competitors were required to sell three lots of cattle, which included two grain fed and one grass fed pen.
Mr McDonald achieved the highest price for the day of $3.90 per kilo for one of his lots, after the cattle were judged grand champions of their class. Most lots sold achieved prices around $3.40 per kilo.
“It was a really good day, all of the other boys are really good people,” Mr McDonald said.
Mr McDonald will now prepare for his first trip to Sydney to compete at the Royal Easter Show.
“It will be a bit of an eye-opener, I reckon,” Mr McDonald said. “It’s my maiden trip to Sydney”.
