A fruitful preliminary final outing on Sunday has both the women’s and men’s Rangers teams into the grand final of the Ballarat and District Soccer Association.
The women’s team defeated Ballarat North United FC 2-1 while the men won a high-scoring encounter against Buninyong 5-4.
Both games were played on Sunday at Morshead Park in Ballarat.
The women’s team will now play Ballarat SC on Saturday at Morshead Park while the men will be up against the Sebastopol Vikings.
A flying start set the tone for the women’s team with a goal in the opening minute of the match from Zuraiyer Rantall.
Angie Paspaliaris followed up with a goal at the 20-minute mark with the Rangers going on to hold a 2-0 lead at half-time. A goal from Ballarat North United FC in the 64th minute provided a scare, but the Rangers defended well to hold their lead at the final whistle.
Paspaliaris, who is in her first season at the club, said it was a solid performance from the Rangers.
“We came out with good urgency in the first half and that helped set us up,” she said.
“We eased off a little in the second half but our defence was really strong towards the end of the game.”
In the men’s game, scores were level at 4-4 until an own-goal by Buninyong’s Will Gibson in the 54th minute gave the Rangers a match-winning lead. It was the second own-goal of the game from Buninyong.
