A Portland man charged with burglary and theft has been refused bail after failing to show compelling reasons.
Andrew Ryan, 30, made a self-represented bail application in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court after being arrested by Portland police at the weekend.
Ryan told the court he needed to be at home in order to visit his children.
Magistrate John Doherty refused bail, saying the man had failed to show compelling reasons.
Ryan was remanded in custody until October 2.

A PORTLAND man already on bail has been charged with breaking into a Cape Nelson Road home on Saturday afternoon and stealing items valued at $3500.
Detective Senior Constable Tim Chester, of the Portland police crime investigation unit, said the burglary was committed early on Saturday afternoon.
The man was arrested on Sunday afternoon, interviewed, charged and remanded in custody to appear in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court for a bail/remand hearing today.
Information received from a member of the public led to the quick arrest.
Detective Senior Constable Chester said police wanted to hear from anyone who saw a man carrying black guitar cases along Cape Nelson Road on Saturday afternoon.
