That’s the assessment from coach Sarah McCorkell after the Seagulls sent North Warrnambool Eagles packing in straight sets on Sunday.
The Seagulls’ 42-34 first semi-final win over the Eagles secured them a preliminary final berth against Cobden.
Port Fairy’s flair and dynamic ends – Carly Watson and Carley Thomas in defence and Narelle Marsden and Emily Forrest in attack – was on display against the Eagles.
But McCorkell said a focus on basics was integral to the Seagulls’ flag chances.
“Doing the basics well is the key in finals,” she said.
“If we can get the basics right then people can bring out their own styles to the game.
“The girls played well but it’s finals netball and we can’t be complacent at any point. You have to play hard for four quarters to be a chance to go any further. We got through it as a team but we know we have to improve again which we have been talking about each week.”
North Warrnambool Eagles coach Dot Jenkins was proud of her players’ season.
“Right now I am disappointed because we had our opportunities and were in the game and let it go in the third quarter,” she said.
“However, tomorrow morning when I wake up I will be a very proud coach.
“I have coached a great group of girls who have worked very hard and gave me everything and have been a happy group.”
