Nirranda coach Steph Townsend has stepped down after the Blues’ drought-breaking victory in the Warrnambool and District Football Netball League A grade grand final.
The 25-year-old told her players at the start of the warm up on Saturday that she would finish her stint after the match.
Townsend, who shot 37 of her side's 50 goals in its 13-goal win against Dennington, said she was going out on a high note.
The win completed a three-year drive for the ultimate prize. After taking the club to third in 2016, second in 2017 and first in 2018, she said it was time for a new leader.
“I’m just going to step back and play,” she said.
“Three years as head coach, it’s been fantastic, Nirranda has been so supportive but it’s time to get some fresh blood at the Blues. I just want to take a back seat and learn from someone else. It’s a fantastic way to finish.”
