IF you’re looking for a new direction, the team at the Skills and Jobs Centre at South West TAFE in Warrnambool can give you the career and course advice to get you on the right path.
The Skills and Jobs Centre, a Victorian State Government initiative, was re-launched earlier this year with the aim of giving free independent and impartial career and education advice to any member of the public.
Since the re-launch, the centre has been going from strength to strength giving advice and information to about 300 people each month.
These have included prospective and current students, apprentices, trainees, unemployed or retrenched workers, women returning to work, new immigrants/refugees, people seeking a career change, employers and industry.

Careers practitioner Michael Absalom said he had seen a lot of people who wanted to change careers but didn’t know where to start.
“We find people have the right skills and are ready to return to work, but they’re not sure how. We’re here to have a one-on-one chat with them and help them out,” he said.
Mr Absalom said the centre offered services including application and resume writing, cover letters, mock interviews, information on the Warrnambool and district job market and a self-help hub with access to free wifi and printers.
“Everyone is different so it’s not a one size fits all approach. We can sit down with people and find out what their skills are and talk to them about the different options available to them,” he said.
Course advisor Jo Healey is also available to offer support and advice and said she often spoke to school groups from years 9 through to 12 giving them options to think about as they finished their secondary schooling.
“We talk to them about current job trends and the way to achieve their goals.
“It’s all about getting the right skills sets for the careers they are aspiring to and we can give them the advice to get them on the right track.
“We also talk to parents of kids who either want to leave school early or have no idea about what they want to do and give them different options to consider,” she said.
